In November 2022, Rainbow Sandals Foundation presented a $5,000 grant to Sixth Street Community Center (SSCC) to support the Spring 2023 season of their Emergency Food Distribution Program. SSCC’s Emergency Food Distribution Program launched in April 2020 in response to growing food insecurity in New York City’s Lower East Side due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been operating weekly to bi-weekly ever since. The distribution provides food-insecure families and individuals access to free, fresh produce, which is often lacking at local food pantries. The distribution has recently been operating up to 2 times a month and, to date, has distributed over 70,000 bags/boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables to thousands of NYC families. At SSCC’s last distribution, Teens enrolled in SSCC's Teen Climate Justice Program helped lead the distribution and experienced firsthand what it means to support their community.
