San Clemente Historical Society

The San Clemente Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of San Clemente, uniting residents who share an interest in the city’s historical and cultural legacy. The Society works to foster greater community appreciation and local identity while also serving as an advocate, presenting its perspective to governmental agencies on proposed developments and legislative actions that could impact the city’s historical environment.
Founded in 1973, the Society emerged in direct response to the growing demolition of historic buildings throughout San Clemente. Of particular concern was the threatened loss of the Bartow, Rasmussen, and Ole Hanson Jr. mansions — striking Spanish-style buildings prominently perched on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. A group of concerned citizens came together to form the Historical Society, determined to curtail the destruction of these irreplaceable landmarks and safeguard the city’s architectural character for future generations.
In the decades since, the Society has grown its membership and broadened its efforts across a range of initiatives aimed at protecting and celebrating San Clemente’s rich history. From advocacy to community education, the organization remains committed to ensuring that the stories and structures that shaped the city continue to be preserved and appreciated for years to come.
